Handelsblatt: Sustainable revolution in cooling water treatment

BlueActivity GmbH as Clean Water Tech is revolutionising water treatment by replacing environmentally harmful hazardous substances for industrial cooling water treatment with natural alternatives such as functional microorganisms and biopolymers for the first time. This can reduce water consumption by up to 38 per cent and overall costs by up to 29 per cent.

Increasing requirements for cooling water
The demands on industry are increasing: Operating costs are growing, regulations are becoming stricter and new sustainability criteria are continually being added through CSRD reporting. Innovations are urgently needed – including in the water treatment of cooling systems in industry, particularly in the steel, chemical, energy, glass and automotive industries.

By replacing 100 per cent of chemical biocides with natural microorganisms, industrial companies benefit both economically and ecologically.

Pollutants such as industrial chemicals, cleaning agents and surfactants are increasingly entering the aquatic environment in dissolved form as water pollutants. Wastewater treatment plants are therefore faced with the major challenge of efficiently removing these micropollutants using suitable processes in order to fulfil the requirements of nature and society as well as the German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV). This task is made more difficult by the long half-life of many industrial chemicals – over a year for some biocides, for example. This impairs water quality and damages biodiversity in the long term.

Especially when it comes to complex tasks such as safeguarding drinking water quality and biodiversity, prevention is better than cure. This imperative can be realised through four central rules:

  1. in industrial processes, the use of environmental pollutants of any kind should be avoided or replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives.

  2. industry should apply and consistently enforce the existing minimisation requirement for the use of biocides.

  3. petroleum-based inhibitors can be replaced by ecological substitutes based on renewable raw materials that are completely biodegradable.

  4. phosphate inputs in water treatment must be significantly reduced, as these can only be recovered from the water at great expense via purification processes. In addition, phosphate sources are finite.

These four rules will help the industry to protect water as a resource in the long term – now and in the future.

Microorganisms instead of biocides
BlueActivity GmbH is taking a completely new approach to industrial water treatment with an innovative and sustainable approach. The clean-tech company replaces biocides with natural microorganisms and reduces phosphate inputs with biodegradable biopolymer-based inhibitors. As a result, micropollutants that are difficult to eliminate can be completely avoided. Operators of evaporative cooling towers benefit from a quick and uncomplicated changeover during operation – without any high investments and in full compliance with VDI guideline 2047 and the 42nd BImSchV.

Save 38 per cent water and 29 per cent costs

Under the motto ‘With nature instead of against nature’, water quality can be sustainably improved – with savings of up to 38 per cent. In view of the increasing scarcity of water, this approach offers significant added value for people and society. By using functional microorganisms, the entire system is cleaned more effectively, which increases the cooling capacity, improves efficiency and significantly reduces the overall water requirement. The result: up to 29 per cent lower overall costs. A new benchmark for responsibility and sustainability.

In addition, the use of environmentally friendly biopolymer-based additives significantly reduces pollution. In view of climate change and new approaches to industrial water utilisation, the complete substitution of hazardous substances is the most efficient and sustainable solution. In projects to date (as of 2024), BlueActivity GmbH has saved around 660,000 cubic metres of water and 146 tonnes of biocides – a measurable success for the environment and the economy.

Positive impact for CSRD and SDG goals
In future, companies will be obliged to record comprehensive key figures on environmental aspects – including water – as part of their sustainability reporting (CSRD). This is precisely where BlueActivity GmbH’s innovative approach comes in: It delivers measurable improvements in the areas E3 to E5 (water consumption, water pollution and impact on water bodies) while contributing to 6 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In short, the future of industrial water use lies not in chemical control, but in biological intelligence. With nature instead of against nature – BlueActivity GmbH shows that economic success and environmental protection are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
