Blue Activity and BASF jointly set standards in cooling water treatment

Putting sustainable innovations into practice is a challenge these days – especially for start-ups with new, unfamiliar approaches. But this is exactly what we at blue activity have achieved together with BASF.

The first talks about a collaboration in cooling water treatment began in 2023. Even then, courage, trust and openness to results were the basis for our joint journey

The result was a six-month pilot project, which started at the beginning of 2024. For the practical test, we were given the opportunity to demonstrate our innovative and natural water treatment on a reference system at the main plant in Ludwigshafen. By completely dispensing with biocides, the handling of hazardous substances in water treatment is avoided and valuable water resources are also saved.

In November 2024, our technology was integrated into a customised container solution, making it a role model for the entire industry. This further development is not only a step forward for our company, but also a decisive step in the transformation of one of the world’s leading chemical companies towards sustainable water treatment and improved water management.

And this is just the beginning:
Further systems are already being converted to our biocide-free treatment logic both at the main plant in Ludwigshafen and at other BASF sites.

Special thanks go to René König, Tobias Hahn (professional in asset management), Thomas Zelinski and the teams in the cluster for their trust, openness and continuous support throughout the entire project phase. I would also like to thank my co-founder Michael Simon – he was the driving force behind this stage victory. This joint commitment shows how innovative partnerships between the Group and start-ups can bring about real change.

This story is more than just a success for Blue Activity – it is proof that sustainable transformation is possible in the chemical industry to proactively shape the water treatment of tomorrow.
